How met :
Patrick and I lived in the same dorm at UNC-Chapel Hill (he on the 5th floor, I on the 6th). We were introduced through a mutual friend, Mital. (She was my suite mate. She was in Japanese class with Patrick.) The first time Patrick and I met he was at his computer, shirtless. I remember how his tousled hair. I remember his thick-rimmed glasses. He seemed shy and reached for a shirt.
A few months after we met we learned we share the same birth day. (He's two years older to the day.)
Practiceship :
Patrick and I flew to Tokyo to teach English in September 2003. After a few months teaching in a cubicle environment I noticed a flyer to teach kids English in the countryside. Patrick and I applied, were accepted and went to teach in Gunma (Kiryu-shi). After a year teaching English to elementary school students we had saved just enough to put down money on a yoga studio. We decided we liked Yokohama, moved and opened up the studio a few months later.
Projects :
Beyond the studio, Patrick and I have created podcasts (Zen is Stupid / The Mindfulist) together. We’ve attended sesshin together and took our Mindfulness Vows with Thich Nhat Hanh in 2002. We are, I believe, linked for the duration.
Practiceship :
Patrick knows me better than any other living being. Patrick knows my foibles, my ego trips, my patterns and my vulnerabilities. Armed with that information, he still loves me in a way I’ve never been loved before. I love him like this: I’d immediately be on an overnight flight to Tokyo if he needed me.
