« 7 Observations About Regenerations »

Have you seen Doctor Who?

If you haven’t, here's the show in brief. The doctor, Doctor Who, travels through time saving the universe from certain destruction - usually accompanied by a companion. He has the ability to regenerate - that is, to come back to life after he’s been mortally wounded (or, gets to old to go on).

Here’s a video of all the doctor’s regenerations through the years (ten total) from 1963 to 2010.

I’ve written about regenerations (including two letters back, one about Rango - a lizard undergoing an identity crisis) to the subscription letter. Though I went, and will continue to go into depth there, I want to tell you how I regenerate here - because, since we're living longer, the likelihood you'll go through one is going up.

And, since I’ve recently regenerated, it's on my mind. Further, it connects to yesterday's piece about being sick abroad.

7 observations about regenerations. May they help you with your next one:

  1. Regenerating is frequently accompanied by sickness. During this recent cold, I had a runny nose for two days.
  2. Regenerations can be awkward. It helps to be with people who will love you on the other side, no matter what you look like.
  3. It’s not unlike a detox. Things leave your system, and then you sit there wondering where the previous you went. Then, you stop asking that question.
  4. If you’re not aware of what’s happening, it’s possible to get hung up in it. Sort of purgatory of regeneration.
  5. Regenerations can be painful.
  6. Not everyone’s going to make it to this new version of you. That’s ok, you can let go.
  7. Some things persist.
To Reflect On

When was your last regeneration? Do you feel your next one coming on?

What do you do when you feel it coming?
