The Bar Method. It's not about drinking, but you'll wish it was.
(This is cross-posted at Elephant Journal)
After telling my friend I tried The Bar Method on Friday, she laughs. "Really? How'd that go? Pull up a stool and order a cold one?" (Oh, I have funny friends.) No, but I wanted to crack one open after perhaps the most rigorous workout I've ever done (save ROTC Boot Camp but we don't talk about that, do we?).
I was invited to come as press to cover the event - the founder of the method, Burr Leonard, was in town teaching a few classes. I agreed to do it because, as regular readers know, I've been on this mission to reach peak condition - and knew I was going to rock this thing. Only an hour? Pshaw, I'd devour it whole.
Imagine my surprise when I arrive. This is not yoga. There are weights involved. And the focus is on the exhale (rather than yoga's inhale). And Burr, herself, seems to know the name of every student in class. But she seems to be saying "Gwen..." a little too often and, to my mind, menacingly, for this to be a good thing.
Thirty minutes into class I'm suffering. My muscles have hit fatigue-level shakiness. When she approaches me (watch the video, my shame is there for all to see. See 2:10 for pain-induced laughter) it is to give fine-tuned posture correction. The backs of my legs are on fire. I can barely pay attention to what she's saying. I hear the word "lengthen." Then she says, "keep your eyes on the ponytail in front of you." And I laugh again. Because it's preposterous and I maybe was delirious.
Interviewing Burr after class, insights abounded. One is the way in which she talks about teacher and student relationships. She said teachers are trained to be mindful of their students. This comes through during class. She said the point of the class is to create a non-impact environment for students to reach peak condition. While talking about posture, I told her I met Tim Gunn and that he said I had "fantastic posture." Burr agreed and said the reason she had stayed on top of me during class was that I'm at "99 per cent" and need to just "push a little further" to get that extra 1 per cent. To what? Peak condition?
The day after class my body had difficulty getting out of bed. As Burr had said, there's no impact on your joints. I wasn't feeling it in my wrists, ankles or knees (often you do feel an intense yoga class in your wrists - and many feel it in their knees). Instead, every muscle group was alive. Two days after class, getting out of bed and walking up stairs was harder. I finally decided to Google around and find out what I could about Burr and this program she has designed. Among other fascinating bits, I discovered she's in her sixties. I want to look like that in my sixties.
Scratch that, I want to look like that in my twenties!

I'm utterly intrigued. You'll have to show me more (improv'ing the bar I guess) this weekend! xo Christine
Certainly looks painful. Though ultimately rewarding, I'm sure. No pain, no point, right? Glad you survived to blog another day Gwen! :)
Oh, is it for women only? Where are the gents?
Kenny not one guy in class except for the man taking the video. Yes, duly noted. Would you try it? You know, you bring up a good point with regard to pain. You hear "no pain, no pain" in yoga classes but I think if it's done correctly the "pain" you should be feeling is burn - fat burning - in your muscles. I'm not okay with sharp pain in joints - in other words, pain that is your body giving you a message that what you're doing right now isn't ok. Otherwise, let 'er rip.
Are you already in good shape? I want to do The Bar Method and I'm sub-par in shape!
Tamara worse. I thought I was in peak condition. I got pwn3d. http://www.dailycamera.com/health-fitness/ci_13169014
Yeah, I'd give it a go! Though I'd hate to give us guys a bum rap. You ladies have a higher pain tolerance than we do. :P
Agreed on the "pain" issue. We should coin a new phrase... "no pain, woohoo!"
She's in her sixties? Holy hell!
I have a problem with the "total exhaustion" thing... it just doesn't appeal to me. In fact... I think I'm going to go take a nap after watching that.
I had to laugh at the great story about your first Bar Method class. It IS an initiation! Burr also writes an incredible blog about fitness with surprising findings and insights on exercise which I recommend. http://blog.barmethod.com
Best workout ever for shaping and toning. The pain is in the muscles and especially ones that don't get used normally. This workout hits those. But if you stick with it, you learn to work through and eventually enjoy the pain of knowing your muscles are getting stronger and leaner.
so are they doing this anywhere else in the metro area besides boulder?
The Bar Method is currently offered only at the Boulder studio location. We hope to be able to open a second Denver location within a year. But Boulder isn't all that far to travel to lift your seat!
Hahaha I cracked up at you in the vid :)
And I'm so glad you didn't make us all do that when we were there. CLOSE one!
I want to try it! I have just started with a whole new workout routine and while I my goal is not peak condition I love new challenges (especially when they are over!)
What an inspiring post! So glad I am heading out to my pm workout RIGHT NOW! XOXO
Barchbo It is 4 days later and my calves still scream each time a stand up. Consider yourself forewarned. And. Do. It. Now. Let me know how it goes & good luck!
