Do Wonder Woman Pants Flashings + Nursing Bra Flingings Count as Link Bait? + The Other Top 20 Most Memorable Mom 2 Summit Moments
(video below the cut)
When @momfluential approached me at the first annual Mom 2 Summit, we had an instant connection. She asked if I wouldn't mind wearing a pair of Wonder Woman Francie Pants at some point during the conference. Well, it helps they are the cutest things ever.
I was only too happy to oblige.
You'll get to see the Francie Pants in the video. But first, my roundup of the most memorable, funny and educational moments of this fantastic conference.
1. Stuffing swag bags before the conference started - catching up with conference organizers Monica Danna, Amber Roussel, Stephanie Byrne, Maggie Macdonald, the Kirtsy girls & the many other volunteers who helped put the event together.
2. While we were stuffing bags Laura Mayes told me Fox News 26 in Houston wanted to do a quick live chat with me...so went to the studio to do...
The Fox live chat...which, thanks to Patrick O'Keefe, Vince Horn & Neil in San Francisco, stayed relatively on topic. If you count "Octomom" as on topic. Thirty minutes later I was out the door and off to the first mixer of the conference.
3. The first mixer - for the Pink Ribbons Project - seeing so many talented and wonderful women and men in one place. My friend Richard from Israeli Wine Direct was there wining & chatting us up. It was lovely. The food delicious. And Ed Schipul and I had our moment.
(Yes, so he had a live reading of blog posts. If you came to my sesh you got entered to win a trip to Disney with Startup Princess. Yeah, no contest, right. Congrats to Amy Brown, the winner!)
4. After the mixer was the Speaker Dinner. We got to chat with some of the other speakers. I connected with Jordan Ferney & Maggie Mason, two powerhouses in the blogging world. I sat next to SEO expert & hilarious guy Matt Inman and Guy Kawasaki. The dinner was relaxing and upbeat. A buzz in the room because we were all so excited about what the weekend would bring.
5. Cupcake place settings by Katherine Center. As Holly Buchanan would say later during her panel, with women, "it's all about the cupcake."
The next day was as jam packed as the pre-conference day.
6. Guy Kawasaki and Karen Walrond kicked off the conference to a packed room with a great chat about moms and marketers. Guy said he sees "Twitter as a weapon" which did and does concern me, but he uses it differently than I do. (I hope to explore this in a future blog post. Long story short, if we all used Twitter the way Guy does, there'd be no Twitter.)
Overall, the talk was packed with useful Twitter tools (Twitter Hawk was especially intriguing - you'll have to let me know what you think of it). Guy has a very specific purpose for being on Twitter and that is to market Alltop. Will be curious to see what others think.
7. I had fun working with Amie Adams leading our Intro to Social Media session - she led one on day one, I led the other on day two.
8. The Kirtsy book is coming out in April (can you believe that!?) - we got to see what it will look like and the four of us were so thrilled and pumped about.
9. The panel I learned the most at was on SEO - watching the tweets during the panel it was clear to me this is an area of weakness for a lot of people in the room. It doesn't have to be boring! We learned that "link bait" is not a bad thing. And Matt Inman (Oatmeal) told us about how a quiz asking how long you could stay in a bed with a Tyrannosaurus Rex. He's got a lot of funny SEO stuff to share. So, Matt, do Wonder Woman pants count as link bait?
SEOMoz & SEO book are two good places to start learning about SEO.
10. Wonder Woman Panties. Yep. They give you wings. (Watch the video to catch a glimpse...Ziv is fast with that camera!)
11. Thanks to Ziv & his Eye Fi cards - which really do show ALL - there is photographic evidence of the night. This weekend Ziv took more than 1000 photos that went directly to the web. And we'll have Eye-Fi at our wedding next week (along with Mighty Leaf Tea, another great sponsor!) - please ignore any red eye or double chins you might notice. Holly Hoyt was the official Mom 2 Summit photographer and did a wonderful job at the Carnivale and will be the photographer at our wedding next Friday (03.06.09). You will be seeing a lot of her.
12. Being interviewed by 5 Minutes for Mom - Susan & Janice are simply amazing to be around - they are joyful businesswomen - it's clear they LOVE what they do.
13. That night, I drank Hurricanes and hung backstage with Chris Mann & his equally friendly guitar player, Chris. I think Chris Mann was just signed with Sony or something completely rad.
Let's let him tell you his "her" highlights.
14. After the party, going dancing with Maggie Mason and Lisa Stone. Crazy fun, y'all. We brought the party. Sadly, Maggie is going through iPhone withdrawal following a, erm, hairy situation, but I'm sure it was worth it.
15. Expert topic sessions - think speed dating for businesswomen - mine was on monetizing your blog - hearing stories of how folks have monetized was much more fun than anything I had to say. The experts were the people in attendance this weekend. I am blown away hearing stories like the one from Kris and Kim at You Can Make This. YouData sponsored my session and it was wonderful to hear Trae tell the YouData model - permission-based marketing is upon us, finally.
16. The Brand About Town suite - eating pizza w/the girls & watching people come claim their prizes (I haven't openly thanked them yet for the new Sony flatscreen & the Wii from Nintendo - thanks, y'all! Now I just need to convince some friends to come over and play with me). It was warmly familiar seeing girls grab their shiny new Nintendo DSes - this is a company to watch in the future, they're doing it right.
17. Moments after leaving the suite we watched a preview to Yanni Voices which comes out March second. Yanni 2.0 as he's know being called, one of Yanni's proteges, was there to sing for us. Perhaps the highlight of the entire weekend was watching Her Bad Mother fling her nursing bra at the guy. And the laughter that ensued.
18. Right after the conference ended I had a fun photo shoot with Houston Chron. Too bad I looked like I was on the wrong end of 3 all-nighters. Which I basically was.
19. The conference over and I was treated to a surprise...
A pre-wedding (yes, that's really a week and a half away) dinner w/the Kirtsy girls Laura, Laurie & Gabby, & friends Chookooloonks (Karen Walrond), the lovely Nelly from Webgrrrls, Barbara Jones and Arianne from One to One, Tracey from Shutter Sisters, Monica Danna, Maggie Macdonald. They gave me a gorgeous Superhero necklace. Finally! Made it into the Sisterhood! *wink*
Amazing, tremendous weekend - so proud of the women and men who made it happen.
20. Look for Kirsty at South by Southwest next month. We'll be throwing The Girl Guy Party at Allens Boots with Guy Kawasaki. And it's going to be amazing.
21. What's next? Were you at Chicks Who Click in Boulder? Well, stay tuned for big news about our next event in Kansas City. Details very soon (breaking on Twitter, of course)!

I met some women after Holly Buchanan's talk who pointed at me and shouted, "You are the cupcake!!" And I was like, "I can totally be the cupcake." Though it's easier said than done. Thanks for your post about me! It was great to meet you at last!
Sounds like everyone who attended had an amazing time! Great post!
Hey Gwen, anything new to the site besides for the new banner atop?
Working on it as we speak. More design changes coming soon to reflect a more "magazine" like feel on the site. Thanks for checking in!
Loved meeting you, too, Katherine! I hear your book is taking off in big ways - one of my nearest & dearest cried in the first 12 pages. That's...a good sign!

Many of those moments were also hilarious!! Thank you for organizing all the music events - you are a super star, no understatement.
