10 things that made me smile at BlogHer 2009

Photo credit: the lovely Carla Duharte Razura

1. Best Compliment? Tim Gunn, "You have fantastic posture!"

Meeting Tim Gunn was a real treat. He looks you in the eye when he speaks with you and you'd think he has all the time in the world, instead of the line, one hundred deep, waiting their turn. I asked if he'd address the photo he was handing to Joel's four sisters instead of me. He said no, he'd sign one for each of them. And then, as if that we're enough, he signed one for me. During the signing I asked him as many questions as I could calmly ask.

He told me, "You have fantastic posture!" He's a Leo, like me (his birthday is July 29th, which he accidentally signed on one of the photos). He said Heidi Klum is my height: 5 feet, 10.5 inches and, according to him, "6 foot 4 in heels!" Tim is right at six feet. He is as composed, dignified and personable as he seems on Project Runway.

2. Best Roommate? Nelly Yusupova / Digital Woman

I flew to Chicago early to attend an event Nelly Yusupova was throwing for WebGrrls. I'm so glad I did. Nelly is a gracious hostess. Both in front of the scenes and behind them. I got a chance to spend four days as her roommate and want to tell you this: mothers, you want your girls to grow up to be like Nelly. She is a level-headed leader in her field and I could laundry list her many accomplishments but she's so modest I'm sure she'd blush. Instead, I'll let you discover her for yourself. She is truly lovely.

3. Best Laugh? Community Keynote

I laughed longest and hardest at the Community Keynote. I then later tried to retell the story and failed. Which also made me laugh. At my inadequacies as a story reteller. You can't touch this story.

I also cried as my heart swelled with pride watching some of the women I love the most tell their stories.

4. Best Unicorn? MamaPop

Marianne and I made a cake for me to bring to BlogHer to celebrate my birthday. It doesn't hold a candle to the fondant unicorn creation that sat (floated?) proudly at the MamaPop Party table (go, look at all the photos by Pacing the Panic Room. They are stunning.)

5. Best Bowl-ga? BowlHer

I was happy to co-hostess the BowlHer party. And co-hostess is the wrong word. The real hostess was Barbara Jones who, once again, blew me away with her expertise and level-headedness during chaos. This woman is the party. Bonus? Choosing songs for the playlist in advance of the party. If you shaked your groove thing at the party, it might have been to one of the songs I chose for ya (and yes, every one of these is on my Pandora work station):

6. Best Massage? Shawn at the Microsoft MicroSpa

Shawn and I had a great talk as he gave me a massage that was anything but micro. I left the room feeling calmer, gentler and more relaxed. Promising myself to get a massage once a month. I might be crazy busy, but I gotta make it work!

7. Best Birthday? This One!

Celebrating my birthday this year at BlogHer made it one I'll never forget. Getting to spend the day with some of my dearest friends, the Kirtsy girls Gabrielle Blair, Laurie Smithwick and Laura Mayes and Jenny, The Bloggess, among other new friends, eating my cake in three episodes during the day, including a slice at the SocialLuxe Lounge where Gabby and I handed out a prize? By the end of the night I felt absolutely spoiled. I owe a huge thank you to everyone who made it spectacular.Including Marianne, for not only helping me make the cake, but for checking TSA guidelines to make sure it would get through security.

8. Best High? 95 Stories Up

The Nintendo Party dinner location and conversation was sparkling and stunning. Elegant like a pair of Italian-made shoes. That's Green LA Girl, pictured above.

The Nintendo Party this year was on the 95th floor of the John Hancock building. I had the opportunity to spend most of the dinner talking with Brand About Town's founder, Amy, below. She and I clicked and popped.

9. Best Service? FedEx On Site

The swag post series is coming later (and I have a lot to say but want to do so in a composed way - many other have really covered it well), and suffice it to say we did need boxes to ship it all home. Thankfully, a firm brought FedEx to the conference so you could send swag back (I only travel carryon. Ever. So the two small boxes were wonderful). There was also a swag recycling area. Made me missZwaggle'sfun room from last year!

10. Best Demo? Aurora + Blurb

The Shutter Sisters Suite was stunning this year. I can't tell you how nice it was to find a calm oasis where I could catch up with Jen Lee (whose stories will have you stuck to your seat - she's a force), Jen Lemen and Tracey Clark. The Sisters held it down. I loved the demo of Aurora and Blurbin the suite - short, sweet, unpitchlike in its brevity. In essence the teacher said, "here's what it is, let's try it out together, here's how much it'll cost. Any questions?"

Bonus Bests:

Best Expedited Sticker Experience? Sticker Giant

The day before I left for the conference, John, the CEO of Sticker Giant, buzzed over on his motorcycle to meet me and hand-deliver my stickers. Which got rave reviews from nearly everyone I met. Thank you, John!

Best Hug? Krystyn Heide

I believe inKrystyn Heide'srising star. She redesigned this site, gwenbell.com, and she and I met for the first time at the Community Keynote. I love listening to her laugh and seeing her smile. It was such a pleasure to get to know the woman with whom I sent countless emails back and forth. She's as patient as she is energetic.A rare mix.

The Shutter Sister's Suite was my favorite too! You hit the nail on the head in calling it a calm oasis. It was very refreshing to come and try out the product in a calm atmosphere and take a break from all the noise and chaos that inevitably happens at a conference that large. I'm still trying to decide where to put your sticker, it's just so cute! Happy Belated Birthday!

Hey Gwen - Thanks for the mention and I'm so glad you had a good time and thanks for all your help with BowlHer. But really, thanks for being the same Gwen Bell as you were the first time I met you at BlogHer last year. Smart, kind, level, fun, respectful, introspective, extroverted, helpful and, of course, genuine. It's been an honor to be considered your friend this year. I look forward to more fun, frolic, learning, collaboration and deep conversations in the near future. You da bomb girl!! (And I'm sorry but your birthday shoes were sick!)

Awwwww... I'm all teary eyed smiles. It was SO great to meet you in person. You are as energetic, kind and cute as you are here and in pictures & email. It's really a shame we never crossed paths at the parties! If you're ever in NYC, we'll have to make up for that.

Here is a video to Danielle's Keynote:

And, by the way, may have to arm wrestle you over Best Roommate, because she was the bees knees. ;)

The best part of the Shutter Sister Suite? SWAG FREE ZONE. That way I knew that people who were there...wanted to actually BE THERE. And not there for the swag.....

We didn't meet....or maybe we did. Which means I wasn't sober. Oh man I hope I was funny and charming...was I?

You are just a darling! It was an absolute pleasure to meet you. I'm glad that I could make you laugh, and I'm sure you told the story just fine.

I'm thinking long and hard about where to put that totally adorable sticker...

Gwen, I cannot wait to meet you in person, which I'm sure I will someday, maybe at Mom2Summit? Your writing is delightful and your warmth exudes through it. While other posts made me glad I did not attend BlogHer, yours reversed that.

Gwen, even though I didn't get to meet you I saw your adorable stickers everywhere. Your post was great...and as a newbie to BlogHer, it's great to hear about all the different experiences at BlogHer. Hope to meet you next year!

A wonderful recap!!! You are stunning and I am not a bit surprised that Tim Gunn noticed your posture. You carry yourself with remarkable grace and poise.

Thanks so much for letting me have a slice of your birthday cake - it was as delicious as it was beautiful! So impressed that you made it yourself!

YAY! Tim was the epitome of grace and class, wasn't he?!

THat pic of you at BowlHer is so darling! I'm so glad to hear that someone else had a wonderful time! I'm sorry that we didn't meet, Jenny had wonderful things to say about you, as did others!

Happy very belated birthday!

I love everything about this post. :) I had my best laugh from knotty yarn's reading as well, and couldn't recreate the story if I tried.
