« Life Experience Series: A Day in the Life of Gwen Bell (Fall 2011) »

Last week I shared with you why I do exactly what I want each day. Here's what that looks like on a daily basis.

Right now I'm sitting in the sunshine in Seattle (see above). I'm working on my 11" MacBook Air, listening to a fountain behind me. I'm wearing a strapless top and a forest green skirt. It's amazing weather for playing, which makes me grateful my work is my play. I can be outside on a day like today and still do the work.

This is a typical day in my life

I wake up around 8:30 each morning, usually without an alarm. If the alarm does go off, it's Lil Wayne singing I'm Me. If the alarm goes off I hear Lil Wayne rap, "I'ma mutha fuckin Cash Money Millionaire."

If I wake up earlier (several times a month I’ll wake up around 3:36 and just get up rather than go back to sleep right away). When I wake up that early I make a mug of Oolong or Hojicha. I light a few tea lights and write in my notebook.

Before I start my day I sit. I don’t check any device until I’ve sat and centered. This isn’t some elaborate thing, sitting. I just sit. Because I use a small travel zafu, the thing tends to float around the room (it’s a beach ball inside; reminder to keep it light). I sit seiza.

For breakfast right now I'm having a celery concotion I started making a few weeks ago. Some sort of greens go in my body each morning (after going through the VitaMix). I eat two eggs, usually hard-boiled. Skip the middle on the second one.

I walk to a local cafe to do the work. It doesn't matter what city I'm in, I seek out a cafe - local if possible - to do the work.

My day is spent primarily in communicating. I write daily.

I write to the letter twice weekly, and to my site daily. I'm ideating on product and service launches constantly. Some weeks (including this weekend) I'm launching things. This happens behind the scenes, to those who sign up for it. I respond to as many questions and requests as I can.

One element of the work right now is in deciding what goes where. I tend to go for punch and questioning in the blog posts. I go for long, from tender center, in the letter. There are questions in all the work. The thread that binds is alignment.

That goes for on and off the web. I take frequent breaks during the day. I stand for part of it. I do a little yoga during the work day. I snack on vegetables and fruit during the day. I floss after each meal.

I eat dinner, usually something light and vegetable-heavy, somewhere getting back from doing the work and doing yoga practice.

In the evening, I work. I take a break when the theme song from Harry Potter comes on.

From 8-9p I practice asana. I have recently added 3 sets of 300 jumps with weighted ropes to this routine.

I usually bathe by candlelight from 9-10.

I read from 10-11.

I'm in bed before midnight almost every night.

How about you?
