How to Rock an Event! Leeds School of Business Event Gets Social Media Spot On
Tonight's social media event at Leeds School of Business at CU was a smashing success. The University of Colorado at Boulder is leading the way for other universities to do the same. Here's what I think the coordinators of this event did in order to make it run so superbly:
- Starting a hashtag for the event. The team started using the tag #LeedsCU to group tweets about the event
- Live-streaming the event and having high quality video available within the hour after the event ended
- Having @melsidwell live-tweet the event to show what social media in motion looks like, in real-time
- Keeping introductions of panelists to a minimum in order to allow for a lot of time for dialog with the audience
- Moderator! Sarah rocked the mic by asking focusing questions and moving the conversation along when necessary
- Taking questions from the room, from Twitter and from an additional room (a voice from overhead - Tyler - moderated questions from the other room)
- Including speakers with different backgrounds, allowing for a well-rounded discussion
- Behind-the-scenes, the coordinators went out of their way to make sure the panelists were prepped with questions in advance, allowing the panel to jump in to juicy questions

Gwen, thanks for a stellar review of our efforts...I think our team did a great job as well and appreciate you detailing what made the event successful. Of course I believe that your expertise (great job on the Twitter 101) and that of the other diverse panelists made it more interesting and comprehensive presentation and conversation. Again, thanks for sharing your insights and we will continue to raise awareness of the power of Social Media and networking to benefit a growing community.
Great post Gwen!! You know I love the topic of Social Media for events and I appreciate your spin. My favorite idea (and one I think is not practiced quite enough) was the idea of keeping intros to a minimum to allow for more dialogue. LOVE IT! Some "Social Media Gurus" talk about themselves more than they teach and that tends to get a little old. It's no fun when you aren't learning right?!
Thanks for the post!!
The "wine" search was priceless!
Great event, Gwen. I know my tweeting habits are going to change after this. So, thanks again!
Gwen!
I hadn't been by in a little while and am loving your new site! It looks gorgeous and I love seeing you so well appointed. I am so sad I won't see you at BlogHer this year... I have a training event here in LA I have to be in town for... Let's figure out a way to get together soon... soon I say!
